Spyware Kits a Continuing Threat to Internet Users

(ContentDesk) April 8, 2006 -- Many users of the Internet continue to fail to take basic precautions to protect themselves from Spyware and other malicious software. "This problem is not going away and so many people are not taking even basic steps to safeguard their computers" Recently, a Russian website was discovered that is selling the WebAttacker spyware development kit. The kit is available for approximately $15US and is being marketed on the merits of its ability to infect computers. The kit includes scripts, which are specialized sets of instructions that web browsers interpret. Frequently, scripts are used to attack computers.A popular ruse is to send out e-mails (e.g.

SPAM) on interesting topics that point users to illegitimate websites. The unsuspecting web surfer then finds that his/her personal computer is attacked by these scripts, which are also referred to as malicious software.A disconcerting aspect of this type of attack is the lower level of technical sophistication required to implement it. Experienced hackers initially posed the majority of these types of threats. However, now a child with low level skills can build spyware. The result is that the number of individuals launching these attacks continues to rise.

Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos cited "This type of behavior is inviting the return of script-kiddies."Many remedies are available to combat spyware, computer viruses, Trojan Horses and other malicious code. Yet large numbers of Internet users continue to fail to take even basic measures.Eric Penfield, a 20 year veteran of the Information Technology field, publishes a blog dedicated to helping novice and experienced users alike prepare for attacks on their computers. Why Spyware is a major threat to your computer
By: James Hunaban

Now, what is the biggest threat to the modern-day computer user? I think most would agree its spyware and other associated software such as adware or malware. It is absolutely vital to keep your computer as clean as possible, if you want an enjoyable computing experience.

So what is spyware exactly? I hear you ask.

Spyware is a piece of software written specifically to gather information
on a computer users surfing habits, normally for advertising purposes. This usually occurs in a rather underhand way without the user's knowledge. You can get these bits of nuisance software just by downloading freeware or shareware programs, as the spy ware is attached to said programs without you realizing it. Some of the more unscrupulous software companies have been known to engage in these activities, but not the reputable ones.
One by-product of this pesky software...

Spyware - Why You Need to Know About It

Cost:
Enterprises spend an average of $130,000 a month in IT time fighting spyware related issues.(Source:NewDiligence)
Dell estimates that twelve percent of its support calls involve spyware issues.
And that doesn't even take into account the lost time of the employee facing the issue.
If you're an individual or a corporation, you need to know about spyware because it costs you time and money.
Who wants to spend money fighting this stuff when they could be making profits?
And who wants to be cleaning up their computer when they could be lazing in the sun at home?
I'm sure you don't.
Cost should make you want to know about spyware.

But even if it doesn't, the security issues should.

Security:
It is estimated that ninety percent of all PCs have thirty or more spyware programs running on them.
That will slow down your machine for sure, but it could do more insidious harm. Spyware - Why You Need to Know About It

Scan The System For Spyware - Frequently

By frequently adding and removing software and hardware from the system may make the system more and more sluggish over time. The system may become slow to the point of being annoying. Yet when the system was new it ran perfectly. There are many answers to why this happens. The system may be infected with viruses that are filling up the resources by replicating themselves or there may be Spyware operating in the background.

These Spyware can wreck havoc with the system time by delaying the response of the processor to the programs that are running in front. One other possible reason could be that the registry has gotten full of obsolete entries and references that installing programs and hardware make in the registry. These entries are not removed when the programs or hardware are uninstalled. This has to be done manually or with any free Spyware removal tool made for the very purpose.

Use Software, Do Not Delve Into The Registry Manually
It is incorrect...
